One of the things I love about NDG is the vibrant local culture. On any given night one can hear music, see art in a studio, gallery or retail space, or view films and live theatre. This weekend NDG Park and Sherbrooke Street will be the site of the first NDG Arts Weekend, a three-day celebration of local culture. On Friday, August 27the from 8:00 – 10:00 PM, NDG Park will be home to NDG Off the Wall, an outdoor film/video screening. The films/videos will be projected on a large screen in the southwest corner of the Park, near Marcil and Sherbrooke St., and the audience will stand on the Gently sloping hill that runs from there up toward the chalet. The images will also be bounced off the exterior wall of the empress Building (Cinema V) as a show of support for the use of that building as a local cultural/arts centre. The purpose of this screening is to celebrate local film/video talent and the great amount of media creativity in NDG. The films/videos (about ten in all, including the trailer for Kevin and Jacob Tierney’s “NDG” filmed here earlier this year) will be about some aspect of life in NDG or simply done with significant input from NDG residents. On Saturday the 28th, the party moves to Sherbrooke Street between Melrose and Wilson where the Coop la maison verte presents the NDG Art Walk and Live Painting, featuring live painting by Helene Mayer, G. Scott MacLeod and Jenny Schade and other guests. There will also sidewalk chalk drawing for kids, so the event will be great for families. Contact Macleod_nine@hotmail.com for details.
NDG Arts Weekend wraps up on Sunday, August 29th with the fourth annual Country en ville in NDG Park, presented by ValoEco, an NDG-based organization that promotes education and action to improve the urban environment. Country en ville features live acoustic music, corn on the cob and lemonade, children’s activities, and information and demonstrations from community organizations. The first Country en ville in 2007 was the first Zero Waste (all waste created during the day was recycled, composted or reused) public event in Montreal, and this year’s edition will also be a Zero Waste event. Country en ville will be cancelled in case of rain, but after all the great weather we’ve had this summer, I’m hoping for one last sunny weekend to enjoy all of the great activities planned for the Arts Weekend.
A reminder that the deadline to nominate someone for the Prix interculturel de Montréal Abe-Limonchik for 2010 is Friday, August 27th. This award is given by the City of Montreal to recognize those whose public life and work serves to promote the ethnocultural diversity of the city.

On September 1st (and the 1st Wednesday of each month) from 6:30 – 8:30 PM, Eco-quartier NDG hosts “Stitch & Share”, where people can get together and inspire each other to create interesting projects.
